Stauber Introduces MAIL Act to Force USPS to Better Support Rural Postal Workers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) introduced the Modifying Allocations to Improve Local Service (MAIL) Act, legislation to improve mail operations in Minnesota by requiring the United States Postal Service (USPS) to redistribute the $3 billion in funding originally appropriated for their acquisition of a new fleet of electric vehicles to support the hiring and retention of rural postal employees. These funds were made available through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

“Recently, I’ve heard concerning local reports of mail not being delivered because carriers are spending the majority of their day delivering third-party packages, carriers not being paid for the actual time it takes them to complete their route, and high staff turnover due to unfair working conditions. Sadly, thanks to a policy enacted by the Biden Administration, the USPS is more focused on spending billions of dollars on a new fleet of electric vehicles instead of training and paying its employees properly. Given the issues plaguing the USPS coupled with the unreliability of electric vehicles in cold weather climates, I believe these funds must be better spent. That’s why I am proud to introduce the MAIL Act to require the USPS to redirect the $3 billion in funding to better support rural carriers and customers.”

This legislation’s introduction comes on the heels of the introduction of Stauber’s Rural Mail Delivery Improvement Act, legislation that also aims to improve mail delivery in Minnesota. He introduced this legislation with Senator Amy Klobuchar. Learn more HERE.
