Branches were broken, a chain link fence was knocked to the ground, and about 250 feet from the road a car was sitting in an embankment.
“I thought, ‘What in the world is a car doing in there?’ It was back behind the chain link fence, and I thought, ‘How in the world did a car get back there?’” said Payne.
Payne had to drive down the road to get cell phone service to call 911, but she says before she pulled away she thought she heard a faint cry.
“A few minutes later I was delivering a package and a police car went by just wide open,” she said.
The Roane County Sheriff’s Department says Captain Tim Hawn also found the car and an 80-year-old woman pinned inside yelling for help. She had been trapped there overnight since Sunday afternoon. First responders were able to get her out of the car and into a waiting ambulance.
